Apart from MOONSPELL and AVA INFERI, what other Portuguese bands do you know about? Well, let me introduce one incredible new interesting act hailing from Southwestern Europe: BURNING SUNSET. On their self-released debut EP, BRUMA, they showcase an amazingly versatile playing-style, which borrows influences from such renowned acts as OPETH, ICED EARTH, MASTODON,ENSLAVED, ISIS and CULT OF LUNA. Burning Sunset are however no copycats as they make sure to incorporate folk instruments and domestic instruments as the Portuguese guitar and cavaquinho. The Portuguese guitar is a steel strung, 12-string, teardrop shaped cittern, and this unique instrument creates acoustic-Mid-Eastern like patterns.
Last and longest track, Ventos Arrepiados, is extreme progressive metal with large level musical abilities. Wonderful, diverse and very tasteful passages and rhythms of the Portuguese guitar along with the Eastern-like solos of violin and cello are featured alongside tempo-changes, heavy & melodic riffing and long instrumental passages. Ventos Arrepiados is so masterly executed that I?m struggling to describe it. It?s like ORPHANED LAND meets MELECHESH meets OPETH meets ICED EARTH.
Seriously, with BRUMA, BURNING SUNSET has written an EP that combines middle Eastern rhythms, American heavy metal and European progressive brutality in such an indigenous way that I?m left speechless.Hence, a severely interesting act that deserves ALL your attention.
